Random Weekend Fun

Although I didn't have a long weekend like my American coworkers, I definitely made the most of my time and had a lot of fun. It was jam packed and one of the most random weekends I have had in a while. Here's to spontaneity and trying out new things!

Friday night started off with a happy hour turned night out in the casino. It was an unexpected but fun night!

Saturday is when things started getting a little stranger. A friend and I took the train out to Olympic Park (where the 2000 Summer Olympics were held) for the roller derby championships. We didn't participate but were there to cheer on the Horny Rollers (Unicorns) as they took on the Beauty School Knockouts. I can't say I was on the edge of my seat but the crowd was intriguing and the halftime show was pretty amusing! Wish I had better pictures to showcase the event but you can use your imagination.

Whip It anyone?

Back in the city, we were heading to dinner when we stumbled upon a cozy little bar in an alley way. One quick drink turned to three and we played jenga with the bartender until close.

We then headed to one of the only late night food places (and a fancy one at that) for some great Cantonese food. Dim sum (or yum-cha as they call it here) at 1AM? Why not?

Somewhere between the Horny Rollers and Mr Wongs we decided that we needed a day trip to complete the weekend so a few hours later we met back up at the train station to head to the Blue Mountains. It was an easy 2 hour ride from Sydney and we arrived in Katoomba to checkout the shops/cafes before meeting the 3 Sisters (rock formation).

We decided to embark on a medium grade hike to the falls and we made it there without any casualties.

success!

The hike to the restaurant was probably the longest but definitely worth it. Great food, refreshing drinks and beautiful scenery!

Given it was Father's Day here in Australia, I needed to snap a picture of this adorable post office. This one is for you, Dad!

Spring has Sprung!

This week also marked the official start of Spring. I wouldn't say I'm one with nature quite yet but I definitely enjoyed our little day trip!

Capping off the weekend, we met another friend for dinner at a lovely family owned, BYO Japanese restaurant. It was another surprising find as it's next to a porn store and is a tiny space with no thrills atmosphere. But the service was friendly and the food very tasty & authentic. I have to admit I was getting hangry (hungry + angry) as I waited and waited for my food (the daughter was the only waitress and the son and parents are the entire kitchen staff) but the dishes trickled in and were well worth the wait.  I tried grilled tuna collar for the first time (kind of weird to eat tuna like steak off the bone but delish) and the son even came out to chat with us about the meal. My hunger and anger subsided and only a good mood remained.

cool gyoza presentation
